What is Pre-Physical Therapy Emphasis: General Transfer Major ?

Physical therapy is a professional career which has many specialties.  Physical Therapists use an individual's history and physical examination to arrive at a diagnosis and establish a management plan and, when necessary, incorporate the results of laboratory and imaging studies like X-rays, CT-scan, or MRI findings. This program prepares students for more advanced study in a pathway through which students can pursue specialties areas including sports, neurology, wound care, EMG, cardiopulmonary, geriatrics, orthopedics, women's health, and pediatrics.

What will I learn?

All students who complete a degree designated as a Tennessee Transfer Pathway will be able to do the following:

  1. Communicate effectively through oral and written modes, using conventions appropriate to their audience and purpose, including critical listening, reading, and research skills.
  2. Evaluate the significance of humanity’s cultural heritage and diversity and its development in a historical and/or global context through critical and analytical methodologies.
  3. Connect knowledge of social and cultural institutions to issues of personal or public   importance.
  4. Analyze historical and contemporary issues by drawing on historical contexts.
  5. Demonstrate a broad understanding of scientific principles and concepts.
  6. Apply relevant mathematical modeling to a variety of applied or theoretical problems.

What can I do with this degree?

A Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy provides the training necessary for a number of jobs.  Physical Therapists practice in many settings, such as private-owned physical therapy clinics, outpatient clinics or offices, health and wellness clinics, rehabilitation hospitals facilities, skilled nursing facilities, extended care facilities, fitness centers and sports training facilities, etc. Physical therapists also practice in the non-patient care roles such as health policy, health insurance, and health care administration and as health care executives.

*The physical therapy degree is to prepare the student for a graduate program leading to a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.  Students who are interested in earning the Physical Therapy Assistant degree A.A.S. should work with their advisor to customize an academic plan to prepare them for transfer to a school that offers that program.
